The Swiss photographer Vincent JENDLY has been working on a personal project on the world of the sea, which has taken him to major seaports and on merchant navy cargo ships. He discovered the port of Dunkirk in 2017 and it was love at first sight: more than anywhere else, he was captivated by the raw beauty of the facilities, the materials and the darkness of this port historically dedicated to coal and iron. He then began a residency at Château Coquelle and created a photographic series dedicated to this port, which he loves more than any other, and to the people who work there.
This residency has now led to the production of an exhibition of photographs and videos, presented simultaneously at Château Coquelle and the Musée Portuaire.
In addition, a video work by artist Léna Maria THÜRING, Hanjin Palermo, which combines views of the sea and nostalgic love songs sung by the crew of a cargo ship in which the artist spent 27 days, is also on show in the Petit Salon at Château Coquelle. Two projections intertwine, revealing two sides of the same reality in the context of the global commodities market.
This exhibition has been produced with the support of the Swiss Cultural Centre: On Tour à Dunkerque (18-26.11.2022) and the Musée Portuaire de Dunkerque as part of the Port Museum’s 30th anniversary celebrations.
